With a basic account, you can belong to 42 groups at the same time; Premium accounts can belong to up to 70 groups. However, you can only have one active group at a time. Your active group determines the default title that appears above your avatar's name in the world.

Note. If you upgrade from a premium account to a basic account, your group memberships will not be lost. However, you cannot join any new groups as a basic account until your current number of members is less than 42.

Members of the group:

• Can participate in group text and voice chat sessions with other group members. See Group communication.

Basic concepts: roles, titles and abilities

Each group has a set of roles that can be assigned to members.

Each role has a title and a set of abilities that define what members of that role can do. One person can have multiple roles in a group.

By default, all groups start with three roles:

• Owners: Group owners have full control over their group and have access to all group features. This role cannot be deleted, edited, or hidden. The person who creates the group is initially the owner. The default title is "Owner."
• Officers: Officers have more abilities than regular members, such as the ability to invite others into the group or banish members. The default title is "Officer".
• All: All party members have this role, which determines their base abilities. The default title is "Participant".

Note: The ability to change roles, titles, role visibility, and abilities is itself an ability.

The group owner always has this and all other abilities.

Headings

Active group

Open and closed groups

There are two main types of groups:

• Open groups are available for anyone to join if they want.
• Closed groups require an invitation from an existing group leader to join.

Group visibility on your profile

By default, others can see the groups you belong to on your profile.

To hide a group so it doesn't appear on your profile:

1. Select Communication > Groups or right-click and select My Groups .
2. Click the group you want to hide
3. Click Group Profile .
4. Uncheck Show on my profile .
5. Click Save .

   

There are two ways to join a group:

• A group member may invite you. This is the only way to join a closed group.
• You can join an open group on your own initiative.

Invitation to join the group

You must be invited to a closed group; You may also be invited to join a public group, or you can join one yourself.

When you are invited to join a group, a notification appears in your viewer. If you want to join, click Accept . If not, click Reject .

Tip: If you don't know the resident who sent you a group invitation, or want to know more about the group before accepting, click the Info to see the group's profile.

Search and join a public group

To find a group you want to join:

1. Click Search .

   The Second Life Search
   window will open .

2. Select Groups from the drop-down menu next to the Search .
3. Next to Maturity, select or clear the check boxes to filter the results as desired.
4. Enter your search criteria and click the Search .
5. Browse your search results. When you find a group that interests you, click the link to learn more.
6. Click More to open the People window, which displays the group's profile information and lists the registration fee (if any) in L$ .
7. To join, click JOIN NOW! A message will appear asking you to confirm that you want to join. Click Yes .

Note: To be able to invite others to a group, you must have a role with the ability to Invite people to this group .

Depending on your role, you may not have this ability.

To invite one person nearby in the world

To invite someone to a group you belong to:

1. Right-click their avatar and select Invite to Group . The GROUPS window will open, displaying all the groups to which you have permission to invite people.
2. Select your desired group
3. Click OK .

The person will receive a group invitation.

To invite several people

To invite several people to a group at once:

1. Select Communication > Groups or right-click yourself and select My Groups...
2. Click the desired group.
3. Click Group Profile .
4. Click the Roles .
5. Click Invite . If you don't have the required ability, the button will be disabled.

   

6. Click Open Resident Chooser
7. Select a person in one of the following ways: • On the Search , enter a text field, then click Go . Click on the person you want and click Select. • On the Friends , select a friend, then click Select . • On the Near Me , click the person, then click Select .
8. Repeat these steps for each person you want to invite, then click Close .
9. Click Send invitations .

By default, you see the titles of other groups above their display names in the world. To turn off the display of other group titles,

1. Select Me > Settings .
2. Click the General .
3. In chapter Name tags uncheck the box Group Headers .

   

4. Click OK .

Changing your active group and name

The title associated with your role in your Active Group is displayed to others above your display name. Whenever you join a group, that group automatically becomes active. Your active group can also influence certain permissions in the world, such as the ability to create objects on land owned by the group.

To change your active group:

1. Select Communication > Groups or right-click your avatar and select My Groups .
2. Right-click the name of the group you want to make active.
3. Click Activate .
4. The group name will change to bold to indicate that it is active.

Changing your role name

Each role in the group has a name.

If you have more than one role in the same group, you can switch your active title within the group:

1. Select Communication > Groups or right-click your avatar and select My Groups .
2. Click the name of your active group.
3. Click Group Profile .
4. On the General tab, select the title you want from the My Title .
5. Click Save .

As a group member, you can communicate with other group members using both text and voice chat. The "moderator" capability provides special capabilities for managing group voice and text chat conversations. See the Group Moderation section for more information.

Group messages

To start a group instant messaging session with all group members currently in the world:

1. Select Communication > Groups or right-click yourself and select My groups.

3. Enter the text that will be displayed to all group members.

Group voice calls

When you start a group voice chat, you will be disconnected from the local voice chat. That is, you will no longer hear the voice of people nearby, and they will not hear you. Participants in a group voice call can hear each other regardless of their location in the world.
