How to transfer a page to a public VKontakte page: instructions

Hello, friends! We have already looked at how to create your own community on VK, but what type to choose - you had to decide. You could create a group, public page or event. And, for example, you created a community, and now you want to turn it into a public site. Or, on the contrary, you made a public page, and then realized that a group would be better suited for you. The question arises, what to do?

Now we’ll talk about this, and make a page out of our community, and vice versa, if there is a page, we’ll make a group. But before that, let's figure out how a public differs from a group on VK . Maybe after this you will change your mind about changing the type of your community.

If you have a public page, then subscribers can offer their news, you can create an event, all sections of the community (Wall, Photos, Videos, etc.) will be open, a block with discussions, photos and audio is displayed on the right side of the page.

In the community, you have the opportunity to turn off or limit access to some sections (Photos, Discussions, Wall), you can upload documents to the community, a block with discussions, photos and audio is displayed above the news, posts on the wall can only be left on behalf of the community. You can also invite friends to your VKontakte group, and then make it private so that users can join it only after their application has been approved by the administrator.

What are the differences between a group and a public page?

  • As mentioned above, only a group can be made closed. This will hide all basic community information from visitors - the data will be available to participants. Joining with the approval of the administration (see how to add an admin in a VKontakte group).
  • The main meaning lies in the name. A public page is intended for maintaining a platform on a social network that represents a specific media personality, business, trademark, etc. A group is needed to unite people with similar interests.
  • The "Suggest news" function is available only for pages.
  • The layout of the available blocks varies greatly. The popular Discussions tool can be placed in several places in a group. Have we already explained how to create a discussion in a VKontakte group? In the public only on the right side. The “Latest News” section is also available only in the group.
  • The group has an active tool for inviting friends. In the community there is only the “Tell friends” option. Very different things.

It should be noted that the choice of community type most often depends on the need to make it private. Therefore, by default, groups are selected.

But we are now interested in a different situation. Let's say we once created a group. And now we lack the functionality that is available on public pages. What should I do?

We can always change the type of community.

Types of social network profiles

First of all, we will give the necessary definitions so as not to confuse you with the wording:

  1. Regular page. This is the user’s personal profile, where he communicates with his friends, posts interesting posts on the wall, listens to music and videos. He can add no more than 5 thousand friends to his VK friend list. He himself sends out friend requests, adjusts his contact list, can set any privacy settings and can hide his profile at any time.
  2. Public page. This format is often used by famous people or large companies whose activities may be of interest to the VKontakte audience. You can add here without confirmation of the application from the owner of the VK account, and also, the profile cannot be closed, since that is why it is public, which is available to everyone without restrictions. Friends here are called followers, and they have access to all content on the page. Even the administrator does not have the ability to remove someone from the friend list of a public platform.
  3. Group. This is a platform that brings together like-minded people - colleagues, classmates, home gardeners, gamers, owners of tuned cars, etc. Groups can be thematic - culinary, entertainment, about motherhood, etc.; target groups - uniting fitness marathon participants, users involved in joint purchases, etc.; commercial, for example, online stores, online courses, etc. It can be made open or closed; admins apply privacy settings to log in, view content, the right to publish on the wall, control the contact list, etc.

In the group there is more communication and feedback with the community owners, while on the public page people can only observe. Well, a personal profile is a narrower format that is not entirely suitable for a very large audience. You can always find out more about how a group differs from a public page on our website!

How to transfer a group to a public page and back

First, pay attention to the following facts:

  • Changing the community type, available once a month.
  • If the number of subscribers is large enough, the decision to approve the application is considered by the administration. To get advice on this issue, you can contact VKontakte support service.
  • The translation function is only available to the group creator. Other managers, including administrators, will not be able to do this. But they can answer any questions you may have. If you have them, you need to find out the admin in the VKontakte group and then contact him.

So let's get down to business.

Let's imagine that we once created a closed VKontakte group. And now we want to transfer it to a public page. We go to the social network (see login to VK). Go to the “Communities” section, find the desired group in the list and open it.

In the right menu block, expand all available items. At the very bottom there is a link “Translate to page”. Click on it.

Link to change community type

A pop-up window will appear notifying you of the changes that will be applied. Here you need to specify the page type:

  • Place, company;
  • Organization;
  • Media personality;
  • Work or product.

Select the desired item in the list, and then click on the “Translate to page” button.

Selecting a page type

This procedure requires confirmation from the owner. You have two options - push a notification to a linked device, or receive a call to your phone. In the example we will choose the second option. Click on the appropriate link. Our number will be displayed in the form - here we click on the “Call” button.

We confirm the operation via phone

A call will come to your phone. You must enter the last 4 digits of the number in the form, and then click on the “Send code” button.

Enter the code

If everything was done correctly, the community type will be changed.

What you need to know additionally

You already know what will happen if you transfer a group to a page on VK, and you even know how to do it, but there are a few more nuances that you need to become familiar with:

  • You will not be able to translate the community format from your phone - the option is only available on the desktop version of the site;
  • Reverse manipulation is possible once every 30 days;
  • Only the owner (creator) of the community can translate;
  • The “Event” type cannot be transferred to either a group or a public page.

Perhaps that’s all, now you know exactly how to convert one type of site to another and what the consequences will be after that. We recommend not chasing fashion trends, but carefully weighing the advantages and disadvantages of each type. This is the only way you will get exactly what you expected and be able to conduct your activities as efficiently as possible.

Let's do the reverse procedure

The process is similar here. Just go to the desired page and find the “Transfer to group” link in the menu.

Transferring a public page to a group

The next step is even simpler. There is no need to select a type, just click on the “Transfer to group” button.

Button to confirm the operation

After this, the change will be made successfully.

What will you get as a result?

As mentioned above, both public and group are communities, but with different formats of life activity.

Before we figure out how to transfer a community to a group on VKontakte, let’s clarify the features of the public’s functioning:

  1. You will “lose” the “News” and “Documents” blocks. Well, you won’t need to delete documents manually;
  2. You will not be able to send out invitations to participate in the community;
  3. Anyone can add you as a subscriber;
  4. All people will have access to your public page and all its materials - posts, photos, videos, surveys, etc.;
  5. The “Discussion” block will move to a new location - to the right side of the screen;
  6. All posts posted by group members will disappear from the wall. Now there will only be publications left by account owners;
  7. All subscribers will have a link to your public page in the “Interesting Pages” block on their profile home page;
  8. You will not be able to “close” the public from outsiders.

Now, let’s consider what happens if, on the contrary, you transfer a public page on VK to a group:

  • You will be able to send invitations to add friends;
  • It will be possible to set privacy settings for content and friend list;
  • The menu will become familiar, all blocks will return to their places;
  • The proposed news will be transferred to the community wall;
  • All participants will be able to post on the wall (if settings allow).

Decide for yourself which of the above features can be considered pros and cons, but, as you can see, the difference is noticeable.

So, what does it mean to transfer a group to a VKontakte page? Let’s draw a general conclusion: you will give people full access to your activities, while limiting their reciprocal participation. And, conversely, the VK group platform will allow you to contact subscribers, involve them in communication, and also, you yourself will be able to control the quality and composition of your audience.

Bottom line

As you can already understand, a group and a public VKontakte page are two completely different things. Each type is more or less effective, depending on the tasks at hand.

Therefore, before creating a community, ask yourself the question: what do you want to get from it? And, based on the answer, choose the appropriate option.

You can see the procedure for performing actions with a public page and groups from a mobile phone in this video.

What is it for

Let's look at the situation from a business point of view. Do you have a business card website? Now this is not enough. For people, social networks are a second reality. And VKontakte and Instagram are not only convenient services for communication, but also guides to life, a guide to cultural events and commercial companies. A huge number of clients are attracted by VK public pages and communities. They see that you have a VK community, and thus you solve several important problems at once:

  • Increase audience loyalty. Potential clients see that you have a VK community. It doesn’t matter if it’s a public or a group. The main thing is that you keep up with modern technologies. Take care of your business and try to move it forward. You create a trend, support it and develop it.
  • Provide complete information about services. High-quality groups and public pages contain comprehensive advice about services and products. Usually in both text and graphic content. The text makes a commercial offer or review, and the photo shows the product itself. Subscribers and visitors to the community will learn the latest news from the life of the company, news about upcoming promotions and events.
  • Increase your sales funnels. A correctly executed group or public VK is a guarantee of increased sales. This should be facilitated by selling texts and graphics that motivate to make a purchase. You will have to work hard to sell the community. Don't be afraid to experiment. Try different things - work with copywriters and web designers, develop communities on your own.
  • You solve a number of organizational issues. Example: you organized a festive event dedicated to the company’s anniversary. Create an appropriate event (if you have a public page) - invite people to it. And at the end, upload the best photos from the evening and provide a colorful and interesting description.

One of the main questions for everyone who creates a VK community is in what format to create the page? You have two options. The first one is public. The second is the group. Both options are basically similar, but have significant differences.

VK offers a wide scope for experimentation. If you wish, you can create a public page and then transfer it to a group. And vice versa! Our article will answer the question of how to transfer a public page to a group, and how to do the opposite!

Key format differences

Imagine the situation: you have created a public page. And they decided to turn it into a group. There may be reasons for this. Both formats are similar in essence. And at the same time they have key differences, advantages and disadvantages, which we will describe below.

Before changing the format, analyze which advantages are significant for you and which disadvantages are not critical. Based on these findings, decide what you will create. Remember - you can always change the format, albeit with some restrictions, which we will write about below.

Public pages are recommended for organizations, brands and individuals who are engaged in commercial activities (for example, bloggers, information businessmen).

Pros and cons of publics:

  • Both administrators, moderators and editors, as well as regular subscribers, can publish posts on the community wall. An ordinary user can send his post to the proposal. If it goes through moderation, the entry will be published on an equal basis with others. Example: you have a public page dedicated to travel. One way to promote is through user photos of the countries they have visited. Many travel publications are promoted this way. In this case, the public page option is appropriate. You should not change from public to group.
  • The blocks “Photos”, “Discussions” and “Audio Recordings” that are important for the community are located on the right side of the public page. From a usability point of view, it’s more practical and convenient.
  • A public page has different features. Options include creating wiki pages and events. The second option is optimal for commercial companies that periodically organize events in real life. Any public subscriber can be invited to an event with one click of the mouse.
  • Disadvantage: a public page does not allow you to store documents. There simply is no such section. You can use groups as document storage (if you need it).
  • The public does not have the “Invite friends” function; groups do have such a function. If you are creating a community with the goal of gathering your inner circle, those who are in your contacts, then it makes sense to transfer from the public to the group.
  • And the most interesting thing is that under each public subscriber’s list of friends there is a block called “Interesting Pages.” It lists the public pages to which the user is subscribed. At the top of this section (a kind of top of visited pages) are the public pages that are most interesting to a person. This serves as good advertising.

The group has its own advantages and disadvantages. The purpose of groups is to unite people by interests. Any community of this type can be closed.

Advantages and disadvantages:

  • Variability. The group can be either open or closed. In a closed group, the user submits an application to join. The community administration reviews the application and makes a decision whether the person will become a member of the group or not. Another option is a private group, when the invitation to join is sent by the admins themselves.
  • The “Photos”, “Discussions” and “Audio Recordings” blocks are located at the top of the group under the news section.
  • Group events cannot be created. Previously, groups were essentially events.
  • News is published, and user posts are also published on the wall, if the group is open.
  • The difference from the public is the presence of a documents section. Admins can store various files there. Consider whether you need this feature or not. The Internet offers a large number of alternatives. Example: Yandex drive/Google drive. But there will be people who want to store VK files for the sake of quick access, in their opinion. This point is purely psychological and depends on the individual preferences of individual users;
  • The group allows you to invite friends. The best option for meeting classmates, classmates and colleagues.
  • Groups are located under the information section and are shown in small and inconspicuous font. Your group may get lost among similar communities in which the user is a member. Start from what you are creating a public page or group for.

Differences between groups and publics

Depending on whether it is a group or a public page, different actions will be possible for you.

To begin with, it is worth noting that outwardly both types of communities are no different (except that some blocks are located in different places or are simply missing). That is why most VK users believe that these are the same thing and do not see the difference. Today we will prove that this is not so.

Now let's look at the differences themselves:

  1. Communities have the ability to send invitations to your friends. In public pages there is no such opportunity, but there is an opportunity to “tell friends” and the community will appear in their news feed. In this regard, at the initial stage it is always recommended to create communities (even if you want to promote a brand/product/service), and later transfer it to a public page. Since sending out invitations is one of the effective ways to promote at the initial stage.
  2. Groups can be made private. While publics cannot be closed and will be available to all users (including unauthorized ones).
  3. Communities have an open wall feature. That is, any participant will be able to publish their entries. It is also possible to make the wall limited or closed. In public spaces, the wall cannot be either limited or closed. All posts are published by the community administrator or with his approval. It is also worth mentioning here the fact that posts published by ordinary community members are not reposted. While suggested news may be reposted.
  4. In communities, there is a “Documents” section in the right column of the site. There is no such section in the public pages.
  5. The “Discussions” section is both there and there, but is located in different places. In groups, discussions are centrally located in front of the news feed and can be configured so that each participant can create a topic. Discussions on public pages are located in the right column of the site. They are less visible and can only be created by administrators. If we delve deeper into this issue, we can note another interesting fact. If discussion topics are created by the participants themselves, then there are, therefore, more of them and they are relevant to queries in the search engines Yandex, Google, etc. Have you often noticed in the SEO - search engine results links to VK communities, or rather to various articles, discussions or topics? Now you know why.

Before creating a VK community, think about what its purpose will be and what goals you are pursuing. Based on the above, you can decide what suits you best.
