Adding geolocation (geotags, geodata, geopoints, tags) to a photo or video on Instagram can be useful because it lets your followers know where you are without having to indicate the location in the description. You can also get more engagement and additional followers from nearby Instagram users who view photos that include the location.
Information about the shooting location is located at the top of every Instagram post immediately after posting, right under the username. You can click on any location and it will take you to the Photo Map page, which shows a collection of all the photos and videos from people who have tagged that location.
Adding a location tag to an Instagram photo is quite simple. If you have the Instagram app installed on your mobile device, you can get started right now.
Select your Instagram photo or video and edit it as you want
The first thing you need to do is take a photo or video from the Instagram app (or upload an existing one) and edit it if necessary. Crop, adjust brightness and add filters.
When you like the result, click on the arrow or “Next” button in the upper right corner and go to the description and tags page. On this page you can add survey geodata.
Desktop apps that add borders to photos
Finally, there are a couple of desktop apps that can also get the job done.
Photoshop
Photoshop boasts many features, one of which is the ability to add a frame to any photo. And if you already have access to Adobe Creative Cloud, using Photoshop gives you complete control over the final product.
You can keep it simple by adding a white border to your photo using Photoshop, or you can add a design, change the shape, and more. The only limitation is your own creativity.
When creating frames in Photoshop, it is convenient to use the Clipping Mask function:
- Once you've designed your frame, add a rectangle or rectangle indicating exactly where the photo will go.
- Add a photo as an additional layer to your design.
- With the photo layer above the shape where you want your photo , right-click the image layer and select Create Clipping Mask .
- Once you do this, the image will be limited to the rectangle or shape you cropped it to. You can move the image within this shape using Move (shortcut V).
- You can resize it by selecting the Rectangle Marquee Tool (shortcut M), right-clicking the image and choosing Free Transform . While holding down the Shift button, use your mouse to grab one of the corners of the image and drag to resize it.
This is what your layers should look like with clipping masks added to the frame:
You can also use this method to add texture and patterns to your frames, as it ensures that your additions are limited to the shape you create.
For those of you who don't want to spend money on Creative Cloud, GIMP offers similar features to Photoshop.
and also worth exploring.
Microsoft Word
If all else fails, Microsoft Office products alone can be used to add a basic frame or border to your image. Basic image editing features in Microsoft Word include the ability to add a frame to an image. Similar features can be found in PowerPoint and even Excel.
Once you've inserted an image into your Word document, right-click it and select Format Image . From the menu that opens, you have several options, including adding different shadows, reflecting your image, and ambient light.
If you want a simple border, click the Fill icon (bucket) and choose Line > Solid Line . You can change the color, line type, width and more.
Click on the “Add a place” button and select a place or use the search
Once you've enabled your Photo Map, there should be an "Add Place" button underneath it. Click on it and a search field and a list of nearby places will appear.
You can either select a place from a suggested list generated by your device's GPS, or start typing the name of the place into the search field if it's not in the list.
If your search doesn't return any results, you can always create a location by selecting the "Add [location]" option. This is a useful feature for small and obscure places that have not yet been added to Instagram.
Click on the selected location, which you either found in the list, or through a search, or created yourself.
Method 2: Third Party Application
If for some reason you don’t want to shoot with a stock app, you can use a solution from third-party developers that has built-in support for geotagging. One of these is the Camera FV-5 Lite.
- Launch the application. In modern smartphones on the current version of Android, a prompt to configure permissions is usually displayed - make sure that the “Location” option is active in this list.
- After launching the interface, tap on the gear-shaped settings button located at the top left.
- By default, the settings open on the “Basic Settings” tab, where the “Geotags” line is located. Tap on it and select the type of GPS data you want to see in your photos.
To apply the settings, restart the application.
Of course, there are many other third-party cameras on the market. If Camera FV-5 Lite does not suit you in some way, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the list of alternative solutions.

After you post your photo or video, you should see a location tag written at the very top, right below your username. And if you go to your Photo Map by clicking on the small icon on your user profile page, you'll notice that your photo or video with a location tag has appeared on your map.

April (Android and iOS)
April is a quirky little app with two irritations to be aware of if you're an Android user: it will constantly ask for your location data, which is completely unnecessary, and if you don't give it access, it will ask you. every time you open the application.
The app can also drain your battery a bit because it runs in the background, so you'll have to manually end the process every time you're done using the app.
However, it has some of the most unique and creative frames with endless free options based on how many photos you want to use.
You can choose "Layout" for basic frames or "Poster" for more advanced options. In the Poster section, you'll find different options depending on the category (Decoration, Food, Daily) and how many photos you've chosen to use.
April can also be a one-stop shop for all your mobile photo editing needs with truly robust filters, editable text, and stickers.
When you apply a preset frame, April may also apply a filter, but you can remove it manually if you'd rather just add the frame.

Select places to see photos of other users
Any geolocation you add to a photo or video acts as a link, so once posted, you can click on it to go to that location's Photo Map page and see photos from other Instagram users who have also tagged the location.
The most recent posts will be shown at the top, so the more photos or videos you add, the lower yours will drop in the feed. Feeds of places that are very popular, such as tourist attractions, move quite quickly.
You can turn off the geotagging feature at any time by turning off your Photo Map before making a new post. As long as this feature is enabled, your posts will be added to the map - even if you did not specify a specific shooting location.

It is there that we will find the “Location Access” item; we need to activate it. By doing this, we will allow all applications to receive data about our location or current geographic coordinates.
We also need to select one of three location modes:
- High accuracy. In this case, the operating system will use all available data from the GPS module, mobile and WLAN networks to obtain the most accurate coordinates. In this case, the battery charge will be consumed relatively quickly.
- Save battery power. Here the smartphone or tablet will receive location information based on the WLAN and mobile network (if available).
- Based on device sensors. The latter option involves analyzing positioning data only from the GPS module.
The second method is probably the most optimal. Although, it may not work on tablets that are not designed to work on mobile networks.

Using the Geotag program, you can easily link GPS coordinates and other geodata to photos. Public License: GPL. Website: geotag.sourceforge.net Geotag version 0.098 reviewed.
Many digital image file formats require a special block of metadata where various information about the image is recorded. This includes the time of creation, the characteristics of a digital photograph, and even the ability to record the geographic coordinates of the place where the image was taken.
There are many ways to insert geographic data into a digital photograph. This procedure can be performed by some camera models. This procedure can also be performed using programs.
The main tool for working with metadata, including geotags, in photo image files is the Exiftool console utility. With its help, you can insert the necessary geographic metadata into files in batch or single mode.
In addition to Exiftool, there are a dozen different programs that simplify working with this console utility, providing it with a graphical control panel and other convenient features. This includes the Geotag program.
Rice. 1. Geotag program
The Geotag utility is a graphical control panel for Exiftool. Geotag is used exclusively for quickly inserting various geographic information into digital photo files.
In addition to Exiftool, the Geotag program can use the GPSBabel utilities for recording tracks from GPS devices and Dcraw for manipulating images in RAW format. Geotag may also require a web browser to work with online geographic map services such as Google Maps. Instead of a browser, it can use Google Earth. Geotag is written in Java and runs on Windows, Mac OS, Linux operating systems with Java 6 and higher installed. Russian language is supported in the program.
What is it and what is it for?
An Instagram location is a geodata marker indicating the location where a photo or video was taken. Knowing the geolocation point, you can open the map and see this place.
- Determining location helps followers figure out exactly where your photo was taken. The information is especially valuable if the posted content was made while traveling to another city or country, when visiting an unusual monument or non-standard establishment. Thanks to geolocations, your subscribers will be able to find this place and visit it if they are interested in the review you generated.
- It happens that people search for their friends using geotags. If you mark your location, you help your friends find you online, thereby increasing the number of your subscribers.
- If you own a business, you have your own hairdresser, cafe or other enterprise, by creating a mark on the map that you can indicate in your posts advertising your establishment, you increase the likelihood that more people will visit your establishment. That is, in this way you help promote your own business.
- By entering a geolocation to a certain establishment, users will be able to open this place on the map and build a route to it.
- The top posts are presented for each geolocation, and the most recently uploaded stories are also shown. Therefore, the use of popular geotags means reaching a larger number of publications.
From simple photo frames to vintage frames
From adding simple white frames, to making your photos look like polaroids, to making your digital photos look like they were taken on a vintage Kodak camera, there's a lot you can do with one or two applications.

How to create your own geolocation: step-by-step instructions
You won't be able to create a geolocation in the Instagram app. To do this, you will have to use Facebook and create a location tag on this social network.
The first step is to create a business page on Facebook and link it to your Instagram account.
- Don't know how to link a business page? Read our article “How to link Instagram to Facebook.”
Important: before moving on to the next step, be sure to enable geolocation detection on your smartphone.
Now open your business profile and click on Create Post. In the window that opens for creating a new post, there is a menu - it is located at the bottom of the interface. Here select the “Mark a visit” function.
In the search bar, enter the name of the location you want to add. If this geotag is not available on Facebook, the system will prompt you to create a new tag. To do this, click “Add “new label name””.
Now you need to select a category: home, entertainment, events, restaurant, ATM. The category depends on the type of your activity. To quickly find the category you need, use the search.
The next step is to choose a location for people to mark visits. Here simply indicate the city where the geotag is located.
The last section is “Create a Place.” Check the basic information: tag name, category. You can upload a photo to illustrate this place - to do this, click on the camera icon to the right of the name.
In the “Location” subsection, indicate the exact address of the point: this is a very useful option for restaurants, cafes, and shops. It will be much easier for users to find you on the map. If desired, add a zip code.
To avoid entering an address, activate the “I’m here now” function. The application will automatically detect your location. In this case, you must be in the geopoint being created.
Geolocation settings are complete - click the “Create” button to complete the process of creating a new geotag.
