1 KB (kilobyte)1024 bytes210 bytes = 213 bits
1 MB (megabyte)1024 KB210 KB= 220 bytes= 223 bits
1 GB (gigabyte)1024 MB210 MB= 220 KB= 230 bytes= 233 bits

A bit is the basic unit of measurement for the amount of information in a PC. It can have the value one or zero. The next unit is a byte (eight consecutive bits). Bytes measure text, video, graphics. A kilobyte is equal to 1024 bytes, and 1 kilobyte contains 8192 bits. What is MB? This is a unit of information that equals the value of 1024 kilobytes.

What is MB?

Category ~ What is it? – Author: Igor (Administrator)

As part of this note, I will tell you what MB is, as well as some features. And I'll start with the two most common definitions.

MB is an acronym for the phrase “maybe.” In what situations is it used? For example, if you have doubts, you can use “mb, mb,” which is equivalent to “maybe, maybe.”

MB (Megabyte - megabyte) is a unit of data measurement in computer technology, can mean 10 to the 6th power (1,000,000) or 2 to the 20th (1,048,576) bytes. In what situations is it used? It's trivial if you need to tell the file size to your interlocutor.

It is worth knowing that there is one important nuance. The fact is that Megabyte and Megabit (1 byte = 8 bits) imply the same abbreviation, the only difference being that for a byte the letter “b” must be in upper case (MB), and for a bit in lower case (MB). Sometimes, however, to prevent misunderstandings, megabytes are written with the letter “b” (in small or large case), and megabits with “bit” (Mbit).

Why is it important? Firstly, people usually write quickly on the Internet and do not take into account the nuances described above. For example, you can often find descriptions like “100 MB” (both letters are lowercase), which, when talking about file sizes, means 100 megabytes. Secondly, in each area, the abbreviation “mb” may imply a different priority for these two units of measurement (which is implied by default, in case of inaccuracies). Let me explain. For example, if we talk about Internet speeds (including speeds from providers), then “MB” usually means megabits (which is 8 times less than megabytes!). But if we talk about the size of data on the Internet, we most often mean megabytes.

Therefore, if you are not familiar with the specifics of the area, it is strongly recommended to clarify. To exaggerate, this is how to expect at a speed of 100 MB/s that a 100 megabyte file will be downloaded in 1 second (if you do not take into account delays and technical nuances). In reality, at a speed of 100 MB/s, such a file will download at least 9-10 seconds (8 seconds is impossible due to the fact that part of the traffic is technical information, not file data).

Note: In general, the topic of abbreviations and sizes with megabytes and megabits is quite extensive.

Note: By the way, I advise you to read the review of why there is less disk space than you think.

It is also worth knowing that MB is not always a slang expression, so if you are not sure of its use, then ask your interlocutor to clarify the meaning. For example, MB could mean "Candy Bar".

Controversial issues regarding the term “megabyte”

Some scientists believe that the term “megabyte” is not entirely correct. After all, judging by its name, one megabyte should equal one million bytes. In this case, this unit should be called “mebibyte”. But in C, "mega" is 10 to the sixth power, and a megabyte is considered equal to 1,048,576 bytes.

what is mb

A mebibyte is equal to two to the twentieth power. It was recognized and standardized only in 1998. Despite the obvious mathematical calculations, the value of 1048576 bytes is still called a megabyte. Although, in essence, this is the value of a mebibyte. Now it is too late to change the system of data measurement units, because millions of users who are not privy to the intricacies of its formation are accustomed to it. But it is undoubtedly necessary to study this aspect.

Why are many users confused about what MB is and what capacity of information is available to it? Most likely, the first mistakes were made in the 20th century, when the capacity markings on floppy disks reported 1.44 MB (and in the C system this value was 1,440,000 bytes). But in fact, the volume of data on these storage media was equal to 1474560 bytes or 1474 kilobytes. The prefixes of different quantities were combined, resulting in quantities that simply cannot be calculated correctly. In practice, the declared volume of floppy disks did not correspond to reality, which became the impetus for the following errors in measuring information. Now you know what MB is. A short excursion into the history of units of information will help you better understand the intricacies of operating systems.

What does boomer mean?

What does the boomer picture mean?
This most common word for many people has gained a new round of popularity in the last couple of years. It has become especially in demand among young people. And this was facilitated, as often happens nowadays, by social networks. In this article we will answer two questions: what does boomer mean and what does okay boomer mean.

Let's start with the fact that the word BOOMER has a long history and several meanings. This is important to consider because depending on their age, people may understand it differently.

Look, in Russia in the 90s, chewing gum “BOOMER” was very popular with the image of a rubber superhero with endlessly stretching arms. Therefore, the first thing that comes to mind for a person born in 1980-1990 will most likely be chewing gum.

Ten years later, in 2003, a film about four bandit friends under the same name was released on domestic screens. The guys spent the entire film driving around in a BMW car, which, in fact, turned out to be the main character. The film became very popular among young people of those years and many quotes from the film found their way into slang. Among these words was Boomer - a BMW car. Since then, a long-term fashion began to call baby boomers, which, by the way, went beyond the youth ranks and was actively used among all ages.

And now the question! What do you think people who know Boomer as chewing gum and cars will think about when they are told or written “OK Boomer”?

Most likely, this expression will not be clear to them at all. And the brain will scroll through a variety of thoughts like: “... what did he say? OK gum? What nonsense! Or maybe an OK car? I do not get it… (("

As you can see, knowledge of chewing gum and cars is not at all enough to answer the question of what OK boomer means.

So let's go ahead and clarify the picture.

And here's the thing. It turns out that there is such a theory of generations, which was invented by the Americans W. Strauss and N. Howe. Among other things, in their work they wrote down the expression baby boomers, denoting the baby boom or peak birth rate in the United States from 1943 to 1960. So the name boomers or boomers was assigned to people born during this period.

Then there were several more generations: X (1960-1990), Y (1990-2000 - millennials) and Z (zoomers - youth of 2021).

It just so happened that in this chain of generations, boomers became the oldest. They are now 80-60 years old. Zoomers, on the contrary, are the youngest. It is not surprising that people of different ages cannot always understand each other. It is because of this misunderstanding that our phrase was born.

So, “OK Boomer,” what does this mean to young people? This is a young man’s response to the moral teachings or lectures of an older man, which the former considers inappropriate and not worthy of discussion.

Understanding of the phrase OK Boomer by different generationsAn example of a humorous tweet on the topic of what Boomer means.
It is important that this phrase can be applied to any people whose age is noticeably older than the speaker. It also has a certain disparaging context. The expression seems to say that: “...I’m not going to argue with you, old man, it’s useless anyway, because you don’t understand anything in my life and it’s easier for me to just agree.”

So boomer in youth slang means a person of a different generation who, in some specific situation, does not understand the worldview of teenagers at all.

Stupid dog meme OK Boomer
Stupid dog meme OK Boomer

You can often find specific traits that I attribute to boomers: they are conservative, they believe in newspapers and TV, they are poorly versed in gadgets, etc. This is partly true, but still the main thing here is the difference in psychology and lifestyle of generations. Therefore, sometimes even the most advanced person can be called this way, who is simply older and in some specific situation did not get along with the youth.

Of course, the phrase characterizing the eternal problem of relations between fathers and children could not help but transform into the format of a meme. And so it happened. Social networks have given rise to a huge number of Okay Boomer memes, meaning that young people consider the older generation to be backward and ignorant of modern movements.

Because of this attitude, the phrase ok boomer can often be perceived by knowledgeable people with serious resentment or even insult. But here, as always, everything depends on the context.

If, for example, a mother tells her son that it’s bad to dine at McDuck, it’s better to eat at home and in response he hears the cherished expression, then this is unlikely to cause offense, since it was not said out of malice, but simply for the sake of a catchphrase.

It’s another matter if this is said to a politician or leader, especially publicly. As, for example, 25-year-old New Zealand MP Chloe Swarbrick did in 2021 to her colleague. This reaction was a response to a remark during her speech. The incident was even featured on CNN.

Video of Chloe Swarbrick telling her co-star OK Boomer

To summarize, we will give two pieces of advice:

  • If you are a member of the older generation and heard OK BOOMER to yourself, know that you have been called an ignorant old man. But don’t rush to be offended, remember, maybe you yourself said or did something that was not youthful;
  • If you are a young person and want to tell someone OK BOOMER, think twice. Be aware that depending on the specific situation, this phrase can greatly offend or offend.

Do you think saying such words is the prerogative of young people? Not at all! An adult can afford OKey BOOMER in relation to his older colleague, parent, etc. However, the phrase will be said rather as a joke.

What is a kilobyte, megabyte, gigabyte

The times of analog media are a thing of the past; now, any information is stored in digital form. Not only personal computers work with digital data, but also almost any other modern technology, for example: mobile phones, MP3 players, digital cameras, video cameras, and even television is rapidly switching to a digital signal.

Analog technology is used primarily in narrow circles of lovers of high-quality sound (vinyl records) or film photographs, comparable in shooting quality to premium-level SLR cameras. In addition, do not forget that any output sound is converted into an analog signal, the quality of which directly depends on the cost of the digital-to-analog converter (DAC). Which in turn forces people to either pay a huge amount for a high-quality DAC, or use analog systems. Let's figure out what a kilobyte, megabyte, gigabyte, terabyte is.

What is a digital signal

A digital signal is an electrical pulse consisting of two values, one and zero. If there is voltage, a unit is set, if there is no voltage, a zero is set. This method is most convenient for processing data with a processor and other electronics. Thus, the digital stream approximately looks like this - 1 0 0 0 1 1 0 1.

Bit

As mentioned above, a digital signal has only two values, one and zero. So, one such value is called a bit. A bit is the smallest unit of digital data. In everyday life, this value is usually not used, because it is too small. One bit cannot even convey a period in a text document.

Byte

The next quantity by which information is transmitted is a byte. One byte uses eight bits. That is, 8 different numbers consisting of zeros and ones.

One byte is enough to encode one character in a text document. A byte can encode 256 values. For example, two bits can have four positions - 00, 11, 01 and 10. In three bits, six positions can be transmitted - 111, 000, 100, 110, 010, 001. With eight bits, or one byte, 256 types of meanings can be encoded.

Surely many remember the game consoles of the 90s, called eight-bit consoles. The fact is that the console data could only transmit eight-bit images. Images with 256 varieties of color per pixel.

Accordingly, 16-bit set-top boxes that appeared a little later could transmit 65,535 colors.

Kilobyte

As you can already guess, just as a byte consists of bits, a kilobyte consists of bytes. One kilobyte uses 1024 bytes. To find out why exactly 1024, and not 1000, it is necessary to plunge into the origins of the creation of computer technology. In short, the extra bytes were used to prevent document corruption.

A few kilobytes can fit small text in a Word file or text document. One SMS message can take on average 1 - 2 kilobytes.

Megabyte

A more familiar word for modern computer users. One megabyte consists of 1024 kilobytes, or more than a million bytes.

Megabytes measure music tracks, photographs from digital cameras, short videos or digitized books.

In those days when CD players were very popular among users, CD discs were produced with a capacity of 700 megabytes, on which either 80 minutes of audio recording in wav format or more than a hundred MP3 files could be recorded.

Gigabyte

One gigabyte contains 1024 megabytes. Most often, movies of more or less acceptable quality are measured in gigabytes. Until recently, films of 600 megabytes were the unspoken standard, but now, due to the increase in monitor diagonal, films with a capacity of 2 gigabytes or more are needed, and preferably all four. Why exactly 4 gigabytes? Everything is quite simple, the size of 600 megabytes appeared for a reason, this is the size that fit on CD disks at the time when this medium was most common. Over time, a DVD disc with a capacity of 4.7 GB has become very popular, hence the file size of 4 gigabytes. Usually this size is enough for the video to have a 720p resolution.

The amount of RAM is also measured in gigabytes, both on computers and, more recently, on smartphones. The minimum amount of RAM for a personal computer is 2 gigabytes. With a smaller volume, you will have to use older operating systems, for example, Windows XP.

Terabyte

The maximum volume that a typical computer user deals with. Until recently, for some users, this word was unfamiliar. Now, most computers have hard drives ranging in size from one to four terabytes. As you can already guess, 1024 gigabytes fit in one terabyte. This size may be too much, but when downloading 1080p videos and modern games, this entire volume can quickly fill up. Many games, for example, can take up more than 50 gigabytes, and after installation another 60 - 70, respectively, to install just one game, a person needs to have at least 130 gigabytes.

Results

Thus, we can conclude that the popularity of this or that amount of memory is constantly increasing.
Previously, a hard drive was measured in megabytes, then in gigabytes, and now in terabytes. Every year, the amount of information that users have to work with is growing steadily. Share.
