Modern computers are very different from their “ancestors”. Nowadays it is a universal device for work or entertainment, without which many people simply cannot imagine their lives.

But this was not always the case, and the older generation remembers the times when not everyone could afford computers. But if you trace the “pedigree” of such devices, you will immediately notice that, unlike the rest of the equipment, it is the keyboard that has changed very little. Except that some additional keys appeared on it, for example, such as Caps Loock, popularly called “Caps”. So what is Caps and what is it for? This is what we will talk about.

As part of this note, I will tell you what Caps is, as well as some features. And I'll start with a definition.

Caps, Capsit - in Internet slang, means writing text in uppercase. For example, “THIS PHRASE IS WRITTEN IN CAPS.” The name comes from the “Caps Lock” button on the keyboard, which locks uppercase (uppercase) letters instead of lowercase (lowercase) letters.

What is special about the caps? In Internet communication, there are at least two aspects that are usually associated with caps.

Firstly, the caps reflects the emotional component or highlights the most important points. For example, “it was SOMETHING” means that a person gives the word “something” a great emotional coloring. A similar approach was common in instant messengers and chats, where at one time there was no particular opportunity to stylize the text in any way (for example, ICQ, now there are emoticons and so on, but before this did not exist or was inconvenient to use). Secondly, if the text is written entirely in uppercase, then it becomes inconvenient to perceive and read, although it stands out against the background of the rest. For example, among dozens of messages and phrases, a paragraph written in caps will be immediately noticeable. Let’s say three phrases in a row: “fluffies are a joy for the soul”, “SOME kind of nonsense”, “did you know that rabbits are not hares”. I think the reader gets the point.

If the first aspect was and continues to be considered a normal phenomenon, then the second, due to certain trends of that time, occurred too often, which gave the cap a negative meaning. And, in principle, if some part of the population had not resorted to caps as, for example, a “super method” to attract attention, then the term itself might not have existed.

Note: Unfortunately, in our time, too much caps is not so uncommon. By the way, this is why polite and cultured people usually later apologize for using it.

Is caps a purely computer feature? Let's start with the fact that the aspect of highlighting something important or emotional in caps is just a transfer of ideas from typewriters. In fact, the “Caps Lock” key itself appeared on the keyboard because of them. The fact is that old typewriters had very few capabilities. Therefore, caps were quite normal. And since computers in their first steps were, in fact, their electronic version (and not, like now, a bunch of media, toys, etc.), the habit of highlighting words in uppercase also carried over.

Note: In general, computers have been and are used for various purposes, but in this case we are talking about their widespread use among ordinary people.

However, there are still situations when people resort to writing regular text in Caps. And it is mainly young people on the Internet who are guilty of this. It all started during the craze for various chats, which were monstrously popular in the absence of social networks. This is where the fashion came from to write words or phrases in capital letters using “Caps”. What was this for? What does "Caps" mean in this case? Due to the larger size of the letters, all words acquired a more intense emotional coloring and, so to speak, “loudness.”

A little later, this migrated to online games, where chats were also a way of communication, and sometimes the only one. But in any network society, this is not welcomed and is perceived as an indicator of bad manners and illiteracy of a person who, due to poverty of mind or lack of meaning in messages, thinks that the larger the size of the letters, the better and more noticeable they are. The first step for such users is to turn off Caps, thereby indicating lack of culture.

Caps - comes from the name of the key on the keyboard Caps Lock, which in English means capital letters. What is caps? This is when a person turns on Caps Lock and constantly writes in capital letters.

What does text with caps mean?

Words and sentences written in capital letters always attract attention. Such text is considered loud and annoying, as well as disrespectful to the interlocutors, even if the person wrote it by accident.

Caps are used by many when sorting out relationships. Sometimes in the general chat or in the comments to a post on social networks you can see messages like “SCHOOLOL, GO DO YOUR LESSONS ALREADY” and something like that. And in response, that same “shkololo” will write something else similar. This is how people quarrel and sort things out. But in most cases, such swearing leads to nothing and does not affect anything. Both disputants end the conversation, while each remains unconvinced.

Nowadays, such a showdown can be found most often on VKontakte or Odnoklassniki, a little less often on forums, and even less often in online games.

But caps also have a positive side, which many do not use. We show which one it is.

How to use in games?

Caps in the game are not only a means of swearing. With its help, you can attract the attention of other people to yourself, the character’s services, and give commands and orders.

Large letters are used by traders, healers and crafters when describing their services in order to somehow stand out from the rest. Using this technique, they broadcast their offers into the general chat and find clients. The main thing with such a search is not to violate the game chat rules; usually no more than 25-50% of capital letters in a message are allowed.

Think about which of these calls you would respond to first:

• FOR SALE Unicorn Leggings 5s/10st/10dex, whole. BARGAIN.
• Selling Gloves of Calm, 15s/5st. In private.

Most likely, you would respond to the first option because it is more noticeable. But now many merchants have begun to use this opportunity to advertise goods and services - this brings customers.

And since such phrases are clearly visible in the chat, they are often used by group leaders while going through dungeons or participating in raids. gives commands written in caps so that all members of the group can see them and carry them out immediately. In this case, caps comes as a replacement if all communication takes place only in chat and there is no voice communication.
